Cole started playing basketball at the age of 3 and was a standout student and athlete in high school, leading his team to consecutive high school state championships as a junior and senior in 2009 and 2010, and being a member of the National Honor Society and his school’s salutatorian. He played high school ball with a fellow future NBA player, Daequan Cook. Cole entered the 2011 NBA Draft and was selected 28^th by the Chicago Bulls, although he would be traded to Minnesota and eventually to the Miami Heat that same night. He stepped into his role as a backup point guard for the star studded Heat with considerable aplomb, scoring 20 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter in his first game – a season starting win over the rival Boston Celtics in 2011. Cole would go on to have an effective year as a rookie and would play a key role for the Heat in the 2012 NBA Finals, especially in Game 4 where he sparked a comeback win for the Heat. He won an NBA Title in his first year as a professional.

Although his point production went down by just over a point in his sophomore year with the Heat, his field goal average and assists and rebounds improved as he continued to be a consistent off-the-bench performer for the now NBA champions. Again in the playoffs, he gave the team a much needed boost in several important games as they won their second consecutive title. Cole is a religious individual who attends church often. He has two older sisters and his cousin, Trent Cole, is a defensive lineman for the Philadelphia Eagles.
